Ranked from 32 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does the game fit the theme?
Is very hard to TRUST people when your crown might fall.

The KING is concern about eating poison or been attacked since he is close to suffer a rebellion.

The KING hires a new Food Taster (Canary). You are the Canary and need to keep an eye on the guests that might try to kill the KING, and the food that might be poisoned.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
I did all code and character models. Also the audio cut and images (Title Image, Character ICONS, modeling).

Castle Prefabs and Gamepad Icons: Kenney.
Sounds: Freesounds
Music: www.free-stock-music.com

This game is okay. Personally, it was quite boring for me. You had to get the correct order and taste if there was a red ingredient, else play the waiting game, which isn't very entertaining. Then there's the guests which kind of pose a threat I guess? Some turn evil and want to attack the king but they're easily defendable. The gameplay definitely could have been improved, maybe by making the guests bring gifts for the king, where you have to decide which ones to discard.

Rated! Appreciated the clear instructions as the other comments mentioned. The audio made me giggle. Well done for one person and nice to see it in 3D when it could have easily been 2D. Fun to move around.

Developer

Glad you liked it! The sound selection for the king´s reaction was fun and thankfully appreciate it.

Really clear onboarding! It tells me exactly what to do~
(Our game is still a bit short on ratings, so if you've got a sec to leave one we'd really appreciate it :D)

Developer

Thanks! Hope you had fun with it.

I rated your game. Good luck!

mmm yummy yummy

This was an addictive play - I see a lot of potential in this sort of game. It was hectic to compare ingredients against the clock and then take out assassins as I delivered meals. But good hectic! I liked the UI, I think yu did a good job of making it clear what I needed to do.

Developer

Thank you very much! I was very concern on making it clear how each mechanic worked and worry my UI was going to be too much.
Glad you had fun!

very nice game, gameplay is awesome - smooth, no much time to wait on next action, very good time balance. Nice graphics and sfx - well done

Developer

Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.
I was looking for sfx late in the morning, thought of putting some screams when the king got attacked, not my best idea, I was hearing screams at 2 am alone. :D

Definitely one of the better games I have played! Perfect innovative idea for the theme of the jam. Great gameplay loop! Implementing the cute character models is also very well done.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the high praises! Originally I thought of been a restaurant owner that was about to be visited by a food critic, then my wife said: what about tasting the food before the king tries it. Say no more! sit down and start thinking of the core loop, took two days to implement the first one (assassins) then other two for the food and in the last hours the door.

You married well :)

I really liked the feel of the game and the sound and art helped make me immersed! I've never really played a cooking game before so it was fun to try out.

However, besides the pausing time while in the menu thing, because many other people have commented on it I have one other idea. When tasting and serving you get no penalty, as far as I am aware. So I just tasted and served every time and never had to pay attention to the allergy. Other then that great game!

Developer

Glad you got immersed!
When I was making the game I thought, how do I ensure you can check on plates since the menu covers the screen and keep an eye on assassins the same time and decided to pause it, bad call on my side, my wife test it and told me the same.
Initially I was going to give the player lives and reduce it when the character tasted poison, then thought it would be too many things to keep in mind. Surely there most be a better way to penalize bad decisions.

Congratulations on doing this all on your own! The art style, setting, and gameplay reminded me a bit of Overcooked. The tutorial had me thinking that we, the player, would be fetching ingredients one by one and then plating them all on one dish to bring over so I was a little confused at first but quickly got the hang of it. I do wish there was more to the orders than just hitting “Throw” to randomize the dish that was up next, though.

I must agree with nubowski and rate this 10 yammy yammy out of 10 :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I did everything I could to keep scope creep away. I had to cut some things like randomizing the nobles.

I like the idea of having to plate the order like overcook that would make it crazier and more immersive. True on throw, I might have run out of mind fuel at that point in time.

Love the sound effect for when the king receives his food haha. Characters are cute, and the environment looks nice. I kept feeding my king chocolate over and over lol. There was a bug where I accidentally took a wrong order, went back to try and dump it, ended up giving 2 orders at the same time. I find it very funny that the kitchen keeps preparing food the king does not want. Bizzare food combos but making me hungry all the same HAHA. Overall very intersting and unique experience! Great work!

Developer(+1)

Glad you had fun! Thanks for the review.

I was smiling when selecting the best sounds for the king and fixing the audio so it would be louder. I see you were on a chocolate roll, nothing wrong with that, I bet the king is a sweet tooth.

I went back and tested again not reproduce the double plating, that was a good catch on your side. Coding a cooking game during the night cravings was not very smart for me :D

10 yammy yammy out of 10
Simple, elegant, and looks great. Personally, I would have liked it to be just a little more challenging.

mmmmm yammy, yammy!

Developer(+1)

10 out of 10 yammies received!

Glad you like the art and design! I been learning blender on my free time and watching way too much GMTK. Is very hard for me not to cross the line with excessive tutorials.

Agree on the challenging. In the past I have been too aggressive on the difficulty, and needed to keep in mind that people will be testing games fast on a limited time.

Submitted(+1)

the only issue is the paused time when choosing other then that awesome game

Developer

Thanks! The pause on the menu is the pain of my design.  I was worried that player would not be able to see the potential assassins, but I have an idea on how to fix that, with better UI and maybe more dynamic options. Like been earlier alerts and been able to exit the menu fast.

Submitted(+1)

Really great game! I love the art! My only complaint is that it's a little too easy because time pauses when you are in the kitchen!

Developer

Glad you liked it! You are right the pause was bad design and kills the pace.

Submitted(+1)

There are sure a lot of traitors visiting the King ;) I think that it would be useful to NOT pause the game during dish selection - that way you’d need to compare the ingridients but also keep an eye out for assassins. Cool game either way!

Developer

The King is a very popular guy, maybe too popular, maybe the wrong crowd.

Agree with you the pause needs to be changed, best approach would be to find a way that you can keep an eye on everything that is on going while you are in the kitchen.

I like the concept of the game and its implementation. Rate my game too

Developer

Glad you liked it! I rated and review your game!
Thanks for your time.

Nice game!! Well done!!! :D

But somehow I found a way to cheat... You can start moving before the guests are settled, and when you go to the kitchen, the game actually pauses... so I end up finishing the game before the guests could even move.

Also, I think this could work really well as a multiplayer game. It kept reminding me of Overcooked 2!!

I would love to protect the king with my friends against other players!!! It would be so fun and so chaotic!!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Agree on the potential cheese, from one side it made it easier to test, on the other side, I left the door open for that opportunity.

I like the approach on Overcook! That's an awesome idea! I can give it a try, and I can see a lot of scenarios that I can create for it!

Fun game! The yummy yummy sound effect was really funny to me for some reason

Developer(+1)

Is very hard not to enjoy a very good Yummy Yummy sound! I also like the one when you make a mistake (oh no!).

Glad you enjoyed it!

Enjoyable. I feel the menu choice screen was getting in the way of playing the game. Wish it was just a bunch of icons and pick the right plate, while I keep an eye out for the king being attacked. Didn't really get the distinction between taste and serve and serve especially early on. Backing soundtrack loop got repetete-tum-tum-tive quickly.  YUMMY YUMMY made me smile every time. Also that's one hungry king.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Agree that the menu for the kitchen can be improved, it can be more dynamic and crunchy. Allergic ingredients are highlighted in red and if you taste it before serve it would take that away, making it safe the overly foodie king. Agree that it can be improved with better UI.
The yummy yummy is my crown jewel.... see what I did there :D

Submitted(+1)

Fun game, but can't I just murder the guests?

Developer

You see violence, .... I see an opportunity. Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Love the idea on the theme! A king definitely can't trust anyone. The game has a nice handmade feel!

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed the idea! Im learning blender and trying my best with the UI.

I was thinking of making a game where you are a restaurant owner and you have to guess who is the food critic, then my wife came up with the idea of the king canaries that tasted food before them, I added my sarcasm and voila! Game Jam away!
The king did something for sure, he would let us know, only if he stop eating for a second to ask for forgiveness, but those milkshakes won't be eating by itself.

Submitted(+1)

Nice game and good execution, was very satisfying to play. Sound design was very nice.

One thing that would be nice would be for the decision of whether the food is the correct one for the king and/or if its poisoned or not be made without pausing the game, through some visual feedback on the plate maybe. So that it would be more chaotic between fighting the rebels and handing out food.

Developer

Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Im very surprised that the sounds are been enjoyed so much! I took a lot of time selecting, cleaning and recording. Very happy it added some... crunchiness...

The visual queues on food is a very good idea! more dynamic with room to experiment and be more chaotic.
