How does the game fit the theme?
Stay in Frame is a take on a classic retro arcade platformer with a twist; the game is broken - random blocks appear and disappear as the player gets close to them. For example platforms can disappear when jumped on, and blocks can blink into existence to block your path. The idea was to create levels that resemble classic arcade levels, but have become impossible due to random, unforeseen blocks and obstacles. You can’t trust any block in the level.

And thus the core mechanic that makes these levels possible is the ability to ‘lock’ the game but still move freely around the scene. In a way, you can beat the hacked, unpredictable level, by strategically pausing at certain positions - locking the game in a state that you can trust.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Propixelizer (3D shadergraph render pass)
Cinemachine
Dotween

All other assets including models, art, music and code are all house made specifically for this project

An excellent puzzle-platformer with a beautiful visual style. The astronaut bunny is absolutely adorable! In a couple of places, I really had to rack my brain to solve the puzzle. Maybe the frame borders could be styled a bit more organically (rather than just a white square) to make the game look truly top-tier

What an awesome game mechanic, I had a ton of fun with it! I'm surprised how many levels there were. usually I see one or two on game jams. Fantastic job!

God, this was... so fun. Music could get a little repetitive with no audio slider to tone it down, but still. It was catchy and fun. Overall a really nice game! I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Developer

Thanks for your review!! Ah yea the audio slider is a little hidden but we tried to be a little meta and make it shown when you lock the game (press k). there you can slide the audio and sfx down haha! But thanks and I really enjoyed your game as well haha, killing the imposter slime things was so satisfying - and i liked the twist ending

Everything on this is so polished. The art, level design, sound. And it has a innovative mechanic to go along with it.

Easily the most polished, fun, and innovative game I've played from the jam so far.

I can't even say how much fun I had; the difficulty was spot-on. It's incredibly innovative.

Congrats on the project. you should release a solid batch of levels to turn this into a profitable venture. A damn impressive project.

Developer

Thanks so much for your review!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the game and yea making the puzzles was also a really fun experience.

So good, holy.

I super fun puzzles. Had to use to hands for some of the jumping puzzles tho, pressing space+ s + z  then + d and time it all was hard but it felt like an actual mechanic you had to learn and improve on.

Music was fun, art was fitting....

Favourite game so far, I have to admit.

Developer

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the puzzles - it was tricky trying to make them both enjoyable and challenging, but not overly hard. I think developing the game further - we will take extra note to make sure the controls feel enjoyable to press together, and thank you for the feedback!!

Great art, loved the animations and level designs, the concept is pretty cool and well executed. Great job guys.

Really great gameplay! I love platformers, and the ability to lock the frame is such a fantastic feature. This kind of mechanic feels so creative to me — I really like it :D

Developer

Thanks and so happy you enjoyed the game! The lock mechanic took a lot of iteration - probably deserving of its own devlog. I think we were lucky as well where some key decisions (like making the blocks all disappear as a group) allowed for some really interesting puzzle making in the end

Solid idea, but the difficulty curve is a bit to steep for me :)

Developer

fair critique. We did spend a lot of time trying to make the game accessible to everyone - but it is really hard to find a difficulty curve that is enjoyable for everyone. Further iteration will probably try make it a little more gradual. Either way - hope you enjoyed it regardless!

My biggest enemy was definitely the controls - they felt a bit like walking on ice.

Still, it's a really neat puzzle concept layered onto a proven platformer formula (strong Super Mario vibes). If the frame-freezing mechanic could be refined so it interrupts the gameplay flow a bit less, it would feel even better to play.

Really clever concept with great potential!

Developer

Hey! thanks for your honest feedback, this is the only time where someone commented that frame-freezing interrupts the flow, what would you change to make smoothen that aspect out?

Submitted

I think its not about the mechanik itself - i really like it. It is more about where the freezes need to happen and if i have to go back and forth with it? I guess i'm more of a platformer and less of a puzzler.

What an original idea! Congrats!

I really like the main mechanic!!

Really cool 2D platformer with a puzzle focus, gives me old flash game vibes, specially with how it starts out looking very similar to Mario only to become more digital as it progresses. While I have seen other games use the gimmick of an area that makes certain things tangible or intangible (A Hat in Time comes to mind), this one is super unique thanks to the addition of the whole screen pausing itself, which was specially cool in the very last level. The later levels also made the best use of the theme, turning the widely hated "leaps of faith" in platformers into a well thought out mechanic.

Ohhhh my god this game has so much sauce. There are a lot of "trust fall" type moments created by the gameplay, some more literal than others but they all have something important to show you. Visually this game is pretty nice, especially in the second zone it starts to take shape as something very cohesive and the music is also a banger. Mechanically this game is built very well, for a game called GLITCH OUT I ran into very few unintentional ones, and everything is telegraphed in a way that communicates the way the game works very well. Level design wise it is ALSO sauced up with it which is delightful to see, I love everything this game does especially the last level, and needing to swerve in midair to lock the camera away from blocks in general is just a satisfying move that is signposted really well here. Awesome work on a very clean and interesting platformer!

What an interesting idea! I took a second to fully get used to the mechanic but once I did I had a blast

Very interesting design concept, love the combination of puzzle solving and mechanics. Easter egg level very creative.

Feels super polished. I like the idea
