How Are We Feeling About the Results?

I’m honestly a bit disappointed that my team’s game didn’t get in the top 100 overall. BUT! I still had a very fun time playing and rating so many games! I ended up rating 144 games, and my team’s game got 130 ratings. Despite not getting the ranking I was hoping for, I’m still really proud of my team’s game and what we were able to accomplish!

Submitted

Pretty happy with my results. I actually looked specifically for your game too becuase it was genuinely one of my favorites. Definitely deserves a higher spot, and your team made something you should be proud of for sure!

Submitted(+2)

Oh wow! That’s really good!! You got top 100 in almost every category, congrats! I remember playing yours, it was really fun! :D And thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Congrats on your placement! 22 is awesome and I knew you get a high ranking. Hope it was a fun experience for you.

Submitted

Thank you! It was a lot of fun to work on.
And I saw your game was featured on the main page, that's so awesome! Congrats :D

Submitted

Aw thank you :D

Submitted

To be honest, I'm not really sure why we got featured since we only placed #160 in the game jam. I honestly thought games like yours would be featured instead! I have no idea how itch.io chooses which projects to showcase.

Submitted

Wish I knew how they pick their games, but my best guess is that they want the games on the main page to be diverse and eye-catching. If it has something that makes it stand out then it's worth the spotlight, regardless of game jams. Your game has both an original concept and a unique artstyle so I'd say it's well deserved :)

Submitted

My first big ranked gamejam, and it shows me how much I still have to learn lol. I feel  I learned a lot about how time crunch hits you like a truck and leaves you with a game far from your original  vision. Not too proud of my ranking, but determined to improve it in the next iterations of Brackey's gamejam!Image

It’s definitely difficult to get yourself out there! Especially with 2,000+ games submitted! Making a game in seven days is very difficult, so anyone that achieved that should be very proud! It’s good that you’re taking this as a learning opportunity :D

Submitted

how do you find your personal results?

Submitted

Nevermind i found it!

Submitted (1 edit)

This is my first game jam and I am pretty proud of my submission and what I was able to accomplish during the jam. However, I had no idea the scores would be penalized if you didn’t reach a certain number of ratings. Was bummed to see that, but it makes some sense. This was still super enjoyable and I’ll keep this in mind for my next jam :)

Submitted

Yeah, you need at least 20 ratings. Butt that’s still pretty good even with only 6 ratings! Good job!

Submitted

I was going to leave the jam, I even clicked on the "leave jam" button because I had no progress until the third day. I had overwhelmed myself with game jams recently and this one was my second back to back jam I had entered. So I said forget about it, let's not rush thing and started to work on a personal project with no decision to make it as a jam entry.

I started learning Godot 2 month ago with the goal of making a third person shooter game so I've decided to finally start working on TPS controls, camera, shooting system etc. And after a day and half I realized I have a semi-functional TPS character and only need to make a functional level and something to match the theme and I just might have a chance to make it in time for the jam!

Long story short I rushed things up and made a short level with some interactions and I finally had my first TPS game! So for an unbaked, unpolished 4 day game, I am really proud of myself being able to just make it happen.

And since then I've been working on this project every day to make my dream survival horror game I've always wanted to make!

Submitted

That’s such a nice story! That’s great that you were able to make the best of the experience. Good luck on your game!

i'm dissappointed but not surprised, i knew i only got 23 rating and give up asking for rate for rate by day 3 of rating...

yeah but joining the game jam is fun! working on the game and submiting is stressful but fun! trying the game submission also fun. is just asking people to play and rate my game is feel so awkward and not so fun for me... haha! overall still fun experience! and i am impressed that i can make a game in 1 WEEK! GOOD JOB EVERYONE!

Submitted(+1)

That’s fair! I’ve found that I get a lot more ratings when I’m the one making the post asking for rate 4 rates. But that is of course with the expectation that I rate all the takes people post there. Which could be a lot!

Submitted(+1)

Congrats on your placement! I'm pretty satisfied with my results. Even though I technically scored lower than the last Brackeys Game Jam (top 8% then compared to top 12% now), I feel like the game itself is much better than the last one.  Ever since that last game, I've learned how to make use of lighting, and my pixel art skills have improved by a fair amount. Development of the game was also much smoother, as I didn't feel like I had to crunch that much. This was my first time making a horror game, which was a fun learning experience. I feel like I could've incorporated the theme a little better. This was a case where I had the idea for the game beforehand and kinda forced the theme into it. I am still proud of my placement, especially since I worked solo (aside from having a friend make the music). Out of all game jams, this is my third highest rated game, and I think it deserves it.  See you next game jam!

Submitted

That’s amazing! I remember playing your game and thinking it was pretty good! In my opinion, improvement is the most important thing, so it’s good you improved! See you next jam :)

Submitted

for this being my first game ever, i am so happy with the results! i learned so much from this gamejam and had so much fun making it. after all the positive ratings i got i'm considering making it a full game.

Submitted

That is really good! Good job! I remember playing your game and it definitely stood out to me.

Submitted

Honestly, I’m still torn between being satisfied and wanting a bit more. Given that it was my first jam and considering the number of entries, I thought I’d be happy just cracking the top 400. But as time went on, I started dreaming of the top 100.

Placing 201st seems okay for a first jam, though I still feel my game deserved a bit more credit for innovation and theme. Aside from that, I’m really happy.

Submitted

That’s very good! I’ve done quite a few game jams myself and it’s very difficult to crack top 100! 201 overall is about top 8-9%, which is still very good! Great job!

Submitted(+1)

Well actually, personally I never really liked the way itch.io calculates jam results, I mean the overall formula. Higher rating counts usually mean a higher risk of your score being dragged down, while lower rating counts have a greater chance of doing well. If you look at the winning games, most of them were around 30 ratings.

So, I'm not looking too much at the results. Instead, I'm really happy that we finished a unique game for the jam, the collab went successfully, and we received a lot of positive feedback, with potential to continue the development for a bigger release :D

Submitted(+2)

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I focus more on the comments left, but it’s still fun to look at the rankings! Though even with your points, your game still ranked pretty high! Good job!

Submitted(+1)

Ain't that the truth. Highest ratings and dragged down by stuff like random 6% of my ratings being 1 stars for... I assume being mad "just a clicker" was popular? If itch rankings took number of ratings into account, it'd be better. Still, happy overall. I've got a game that got the most ratings, which is a FAR better reception than I expected off of just wanting to test out shaders and the idea of filling in an upgrade menu instead of just using nodes. Really happy with it, even if rankings are busted, lol.

Submitted

I remember seeing your game up there for basically the whole thing! I've always wondered how entries get to the most rated and stay up there. Mind telling me your secret, or was it just luck?

Submitted

Well, I posted EARLY, which means anyone just checking out games while the jam was still in development phase saw mine, even if it was still getting updates. Basically as soon as I had a minimum viable product for all game, sound, and theme, I put it up there and modified it each day. Second, I think incrementals just get a lot of views on itch. In that first week, most of my traffic was from the incremental tag or the cozy tag and not from the gamejam links. So... if you didn't put tags on your games, put tags on them. Non-game jam traffic definitely has an effect on popularity!

Besides that? Luck, I'd say.

Submitted

We put tags on our game, but I do think I heard somewhere incremental games were popular on itch. I had a theory posting early was a factor, but I wasn't sure until you confirmed! Thanks for telling me! :D

Submitted

damn honestly i really enjoyed your game haha - thought it was defs gonna feature in the top 10. It was really fun popping all those slimes haha - and your visuals was really cool.

Submitted

Yeahh I agree with that sentiment a lot. When the results came out, I was kinda shocked since I wasn't expecting the results at all, I found out that the ratings is mostly based on the medium, meaning having higher rating counts will actually have higher chances of lowering your rank. If the rating counts is added as a factor to having a higher rank, I think it would have been a good add since that would foster a stronger community where people are more willing to put time to try everyone's work.

I'm very happy with our game's result for this game jam since I really think my friends put serious amount of effort into this project!!! As we speak, they are still updating and adding stuff to the game! HAHA. I'm just annoyed some deserved works don't get the appropriate ranks that they should based on the calculations done on Itch. I still had a blast playing everyone's hard work and creativity!!!! The community is super positive and full of vibes!

Submitted(+1)

Those results are amazing, congratulations!  I remember playing your game and having a lot of fun with it! And your point makes sense! I stopped caring too much about the ranking results after my first jam. Also, I don’t think you’re supposed to update the jam entry after the first 48 hours after the submission period is over. I think the rule states that if you want to make any other updates, you should make a new project and keep the original as the “jam version”.

Submitted

Oh darn, I thought we can update the game after the game jam rating is over. I think we missed the part where they say first 48 hours after submission part. It's quite funny to have 2 projects with the same name on our page though hahaha

Submitted

Yeah, a lot of people miss that rule. But I don’t think it’s weird to have two versions of the same game on your page! One of my teammates did something similar with his game from the last Brackey’s game jam. He renamed the old one as the “jam version” and the new one as the expanded version. I think the rule is in place so that future players aren’t misled about what was done during the jam period. Or maybe if Brackey’s makes a video on some of the games, he wants them to be shown as they were when submitted. Or something like that. A lot of people don’t follow or listen to the rule though.

Submitted

I did pretty much exactly as I expected, so I’m neither disappointed nor proud of myself overall. About average is probably the best I’ll ever do in a game jam, since I’m too lazy to be bothered to put effort into aspects of development that I don’t enjoy (polish). I’m just offended that none of you appreciated my artistic vision! I worked really hard on the like 3 sprites and 1 background that I drew during the jam! (nah jk I actually know my art sucks, especially since I didn’t have a lot of time to work on it). I had so little time to work on the game that I lowkey surprised myself when I actually managed to finish it.

Anyway, does anyone know when the next Brackeys Jam will be?

Submitted

Making a game in 7 days is really hard, so submitting a finished product is impressive as is!

The next Brackey's jam starts February 14 (6 months from now. You can register here or on this jam's page: /jam/brackeys-17

Submitted

This was such a fun game jam! I initially joined the game jam just so I can get my students to join the game jam as well (I teach games stuff as my day job) just to create that sense of competition with them. I'm actually quite surprised people really liked my team's game since it was text heavy but it makes sense considering everyone here are developers and are somewhat comfortable with reading code xD.

I think this is my highest placed rank yet in a game jam. I'm super happy with it and might look into developing the game further along the lines later on! But I do think that there are so much amazing games that deserved a higher ranking. But regardless of rankings, I think everyone deserves to pat themselves in the back for creating a game in such a short time!

also 67 ratings eheheehehehe....

Submitted

Congrats! That’s an amazing ranking. I don’t think I I managed to rate your game, but it looks great!

Absolutely blown away by the result. Me and my friend entered this jam with the stretch goal of getting top 50 in a category or getting top 100 overall. Amazing experience (with this being my second game jam) and I'm so glad that people really resonated with our core mechanic.

my friend and i were thinking of continuing it and eventually turning it into a steam release -> if any of you guys wanted updates we provided a discord link in the comments of our submission

But just looking at the distribution of scores (especially for gameplay) it was really really tight at the top - like sometimes the difference between places was like 0.01 - meaning the variance would have been crazy for the first 30 or so places -  and yea i completely agree that with more reviews you increase the likelihood of your game getting dragged down.

honestly - ratings are just one component of what makes us make games - and have fun in jams -  played some amazing games in this jam and everyone should be so proud of themselves.

Submitted

You should be extremely proud! Those are amazing results. I haven’t played your game, but I’m sure it was great :D

Submitted

looking back at my first brackeys game jam submission, i have improved a lot. even tho i was expecting a bit more on some categories, i am happy with my results.

also i wasnt able to play&rate games and promote my game to get more ratings as i have anticipated because i had school and having to focus on both would be overwhelming, but i have rated 52 submissions so i guess i have done well under pressure.

also ur submission and lots of other submissions should be higher in the ranks icl

Submitted(+1)

That's a good way to look at it! And 52 gamees rated is a huge accomplisment! Congrats! As for my game's rating, is it what it is, I guess. All I can do is hope I do better next time :D

Submitted

That's a lot of ranking and feedback you got! You did awesome, but I get where you are coming from. If you do the math you got a 91% in ranking so that's an "A" ;D

Submitted

That's a good point! An "A" it is :D

Never expected to get #56th in innovation. My first game jam. That too I think because of the fa t that I made it in Canva. I'll make my next game in Godot though.

Tbrh a pretty good experience:)
