Trust the syndicate and pay off the debt?
Or maybe gather your money and run?
What is this voice I hear at night?
Who can you trust?

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Every line of code and the hideous pixel art were created specifically for the game jam.

Enjoyed the game, stating the obvious, some audio would've made it much more immersive, maybe bouncy club music track in the background, but it was still fun, I got 2 endings.
Good job!

Developer

That was exactly what I was aiming for: the club music, simple sound effects for the dialogue box.
I am not the best soud desiner, had very limited time and the GAME told me not to do it.
At first I gave it a shot,  downloaded bosca ceoil, tried to make some music. I put 3 notes on the sheet and then the app simply crashed.
I uninstalled it and came back to bugfixing.

Any free, bouncy club music would have been fine. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the game—it made me want to go back and play Papers, Please.

Submitted

this is a unique papers please take. I think there are a lot of systems that work well, impressive for this jam as a solo. the searching mechanic was really cool.

Developer

Thank you for the comment, I am really happy to hear that!

Submitted

Really fun, i had a great time playing it, the only problem is the audio

Developer

Thanks! You are right, good sound effects and music would definitely improve the game's overall atmosphere, but I'm not the best sound designer and I didn't have much time, so Instead of taking a risk I decided to focus on balancing and bug fixes.

Submitted

Even without any sound it’s such a fun game! I love your take on it and I love how there’s more parties at play than what it seems at first. Super impressive that you were able to do all this in one week, on your own, entirely from scratch.

Loved it! Fantastic job, can’t wait to play the other endings :P

I'm glad you like the game!

By the way, how did you find my game? Through a post or the GameJam homepage? I’d like to know because I really want to get those required 20 ratings (I’d like to see how my game stacks up against the others) without flooding the community board with “R for R” posts, and if just being patient is the solution, I’m happy to do that. :)

Submitted(+1)

I found it through one of the R for R posts lol XD I don’t think it’s a bad thing to try and get your game out there, especially given the sheer number of entries in the jam

I doubt very many games would be able to get the 20 by just waiting alone so I don’t think it’s a bad thing to go looking for people who’ll rate your game!

Art was really charming and the game was fun! I feel bad you couldn't get the audio in time because it would've made it so much better, but i still liked it!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I'm also upset about the lack of audio. I'd really like to remake this prototype into a proper game with full sound in the future.

Submitted

Don't be so harsh on your art! I think your idea is pretty art hungry, so the fact you got it done with everything else in a week is great.

Developer

Due to a lack of time (and skill, definitely skill) on my part, the graphics I created were sloppy. I decided to embrace my sloppy style and actually found a certain charm in it, but I’m not proud of it.

really gad fun balancing between money and chaos! Also rellay liked the visuals

Developer

I am really happy to hear that!

HAHAHHHAAH i laughed so hard when I realized what the game was. Great idea for the theme of the jam! Sucks you couldnt get music in time. There are tons of websites that offer free sound effects as long as you follow their license/credit them. Overall great idea!

Developer

Thank you for the comment, I am happy that you liked it!
I'd love to but had no time to add the sound effects.

I had a blast with this - balancing the temptation of the bribe money against keeping the club from going chaotic was fun.  I think multiple endings are such a smart touch, it does make me want to replay just to see how different choices turn out. My only small thought was that auto-advancing the line could make the flow feel even smoother instead of having to click the inspecting button everytime. Overall, it's a great experience even without audio :) If you happen to have a free moment during the jam, we'd be thrilled if you gave our game a look too!

Developer

Thanks for the review, I'm glad you liked the game. I'll definitely check out yours!

We actually planned a very similar idea where you manage an apocalypse camp and scan through resumes to decide who to trust! Because of that, I was super excited to see your take on it, and I know firsthand from our own brainstorming just how tough it is to nail a solid Papers, Please style mechanic.

The visuals are spot-on for a jam project! Also, honestly: having no sound at all is infinitely better than having audio that is way too loud or completely out of place.

Gameplay-wise, I am still not 100% sure if I grasped every single nuance, but for a game built around suspicion and doubt, that probably works in its favor! :)

Developer

I'm a solo developer who's actually shocked that  managed to finish the project on time.

I know absolutely nothing about sound design, so skipping it probably turned out for the best.

As for the gameplay mechanics, I really should have explained them better, perhaps with a better tutorial. From a developer’s perspective, everything about the gameplay is obvious, but from a player’s perspective, it can indeed be unclear.

Thank you for Your detailed comment!

I really enjoyed this game! it was fun, but I couldn't seem to get the fail all 3 ending...

Developer

Thank you for the comment.

What do you mean by "get the fail all 3 ending."?

Submitted

I tried to bring the max chaos level every time, and ended up just getting the lost all money one instead

Developer (1 edit)

Remember that you can click on itemaduring searching guests, then they will give you the bribe that gives more money.

If the chaos a little over 100% stop leting in guests becouse more over the limit  the bigger cash penalties.

I should have rework the chaos bar to show when its full and overflowing.

It's great though! I really liked it!

Nice game, not a super fan of the artstyle but for 1 week is super ok.

Developer

Me neither haha, thanks for feedback and honest review!

Submitted

Nice art. Nice concept. Would be very replayable once having more variaty.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I made whole system for generating NPC's  to make the game more replayable, but due to some late-night spaghetti coding bugs and lack of time - I gave up on that, and focused on the graphics, which didn't exist at the time.

The visuals look great! It would be nice if you could easily retry after a game over.

Developer

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback!
