Ranked from 38 ratings. Score is adjusted from raw score by the median number of ratings per game in the jam.

How does the game fit the theme?
You can’t blindly trust what characters tell you. The NPCs give information based on their perspective, the player has to interpret clues instead of following instructions.
The protagonist can't fully trust himself either. The world and its characters are tied to parts of Atlas that he suppressed or misunderstood. Even the title plays with the theme. Better Left Unsaid reflects Atlas’ initial belief, but it may not be the right choice...

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
- Dialogic system: the dialogues are managed by this Godot addon.
- Inner system made for other games that could be reused in this project like the Audio management or the interactions.
- Shaders(transition, outlines)

Short and sweet, but nicely executed for a jam project. I loved the visual effect changing the tiles towards the end of the game

Really interesting concept! The mouse was such a cutie. I found the italics with the font was a bit hard to read, but otherwise great job!

Pretty cool game. I like the art style at the beginning where you combined the pixel-art characters with photograph backgrounds. 😎

Some things are better left unsaid....

Well the fact that this game has a strong message is not one of them! I like the topic of dealing with an "internal turmoil" caused by being thrown around despite being the nicest person alive and coming to the conclusion that it really is better to just talk to someone about it.

Bottling negative emotions and not talking to people (let alone psychiatrists) about it is sadly a very common thing nowadays, with myself included.

Great stuff! I wish it was a bit longer though

I'm happy the message resonated with you. I wasn't sure what you meant by "The fact that this game has a strong message is not one of them", could you please expand on that :3?
The game story was supposed to be a little longer(maybe not just a little 😅) but unfortunately for the jam things had to be cut out.
Thanks for playing!

I guess the joke is a bit confusing: But the compliment shouldn't be left unsaid, but instead, well, said!

That's all!

That was an amazing pun 😁I remember you to rate if you haven't yet :D Thank you for your kind words!

Good job on getting this game out there! The story setup is interesting - our poor purple is too selfless and deserves better.

Some feedback: the long windup to the walk was quite frustrating and it made me at first think I couldn't move. Additionally, your itch page forgot to mention 'Mouse' as part of the controls.

The game ended surprisingly short, I'd want to see more of it and hope to see the world expanded upon further!

The movement has been improved in the post-jam game version to be more responsive. I'm pleased the game sparked interest in you :D

I’m a fan of the art style of the comic at the start and the end of the game. I found it funny how you used a random real life photo with lots of blur for the background.

It’s an interesting take on the "Trust No One" theme. It’s a shame it’s so short, I liked it.

The only thing that bothered me was the pace of the comic at the end of the game. I could barely keep up with the text (well, English isn't my native language 😋). I’d have liked the game to wait for the player to tap the screen or press a button, before moving on to the next screen

Developer

Hi, thanks for playing the feedback!

Yes the backgrounds are just, as you said, blurred images 😅 Time was getting in the way so instead of learning on the go to make them, I just did it this way. Turned out to be great though 😄 About the text being too fast, I see why and most definitly will look into it post jam.

Thanks for playing!

I always tend to skip over the story and go straight to the gameplay, but in this game the story really takes center stage. From the decisions to the various "tasks" I was invested the whole time. I thought the walking felt a bit sluggish, but maybe because it was a dream, hence the movement choice. The shader transition out of the dream was  cool. Nice job!!

Developer

Hi, I really appreciate your compliments! We're happy we could get someone that usually skips story hooked into ours :D

 Thank you for playing!

So sweet, loved how the story turned out in the end :>

I really liked the sound and visuals also, but sometimes footsteps sound could get a bit off, like there's multiple people walking at same time... for the sprites, it's weird you get "under" the npcs sprites also. But I still got an amazing experience, it's a creative and emotional game, congrats to the team :)

Developer

Hi, thank you for reporting those problems, we'll move to solve them post jam :D

Thank you very much for playing!

A short, bittersweet story. I actually wished there was more content because I really related to the main character in the premise and was ready to get emotional. :D Congrats on getting the submission done!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm definitly going to add further content for the game. If you want to support the project, I invite you to follow my profilo for future updates! :D

Very relatable story, I liked the world you created! There's definitely potential here and it would be cool to see it developed further into a full game!
For improvement, I think the movement animations could use some fine-tuning (for example, walking left or right looks awkward because the character's torso is completely still. Having his torso move as well will help it feel more alive!) as well as some font errors that caused characters to not load correctly.

Overall though, great job!

Hi! Im happy you found the story relatable, we'll definitly look into updating the game further! So if you'd like to, I invite you to follow my profile to get updated on future game development :D

Liked: The art is cute and the story is nice and comforting.

Could improve: Honestly not much. It does everything it sets out to do.

Additional Comments: It's a short and sweet game where you don't let the world around you bring you down to it's level. You're allowed to feel but that doesn't mean you have stop being kind because of it. At least that is my take away. Good Job!

Developer

Hi, thanks for the kind words! Your interpretation is really close to the message we wanted to express :D

Hello! I really enjoyed the opening scene and liked your take on the theme. My main critic would be about the clunky movement, it feels like or looks like it accelerates at first and felt kind of weird. I wish there was a bit more to the story but obviously this is a game jam so it's hard to blame you!! Did seem like the end came a bit too soon but I do think you have a pretty good narrative idea here and I could see it being developed well!! I must say the intro humanoid art is weirdly charming haha :)

Developer

Hi! First of all thanks for playing!
To the movement it has been added acceleration intentionally, though it's my first time doing top down view so It might have added to the clunkyness. I'm happy the story idea was appreciated :D Yes, with the time constraints it had to be ended a bit abruptly but looking into continuing it post jam :D

I really liked the mix of the two art styles, and the story felt really nice. The music was good as well.
It would have been nice if the world felt a little more built out and had some ambient terrain.
Great job on completing this!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words :D

I'll definitly look into polishing up the world post jam; Since you liked the game, I invite you to rate it if you haven't already, it would really help out :)

Thanks for playing!

Ha ha, thought that I already had. I did it now though

This is such a pretty game. I really like the intro, the story, and the simple mechanics. The story is really good, and I agree with the last statement. The intro really got me hooked, mannn. Beautiful game!

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words! Happy the intro did its job :)

Hi !

I love the narrative and the atmosphere you managed to create despite simple/learner visual arts, and how you cleverly re-used the character's assets to create multiple characters.

I liked having to solve the puzzles and the choices we can make in the dialogues to find the right path to make progress too. The story is interesting and makes me want to know more o_o

Your games hower feels a bit unpolished, but I think it's mainly due to the fact you are learning art. I can't give you 5/5 because it would be unfair to other, more experienced artists but I think you're on the right path ! I myself don't dare yet to create my own art for games. Apart from that everything else looks pretty solid to me !

Developer(+1)

Hi! Thank you very much for the kind words! Happy the story intrigued you; we're considering continuing it post-jam! Im very much learning art yes, so I'm amazed by the amount of people who liked it anyways! Thanks for playing :D

Submitted

Oh, can you tell me if/when you issue another version with more story contents then ? I'll be happy to play again, I love narrative-driven games!

I couldn't do your pixel art if I tried so well done :p

Submitted

I liked the narration and the music of the game, but I am not sure is there anything more to the story after the guy saying I am you and the ending plays? Also, the movement and the animation of the player for me doesn't really sync up, there is also player sprites at below of other character's sprite which was already mentioned in the comments. But. overall a nice game!

Developer

Hello, thanks for the kind words! There was supped to be more content but we really had to cut trough much of it. Many people talked about wanting a continuation so we might aswell do it post jam! About the problem with the sprites, you mean z indexing? Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Yep I meant z-indexing

Interesting entry!

You did a great job setting the tone in the intro cutscene, I found it very relatable, and the music particularly stood out as helping carry that along across every track. Music was both competently made and very well tailored to the narrative and emotional tone - big props to the composer!

Visually, everything was clear and understandable which is the most important thing. The sprites were well drawn, but the walking animation maybe looked a little off.

Couple of minor bugs here and there that I think you could spend a pretty short amount of time figuring out before your next jam and you'll be able to handle them very quickly. The most obvious were the missing font glyphs (I think it was an apostrophe and I noticed one later that did render, I didn't go back to check if it was the same font but if so it probably means the "broken" one was likely trying to use the typographic apostrophe " ’ " and the working one was the more common typewriter apostrophe " ' ") and some iffy z-indexing (godot has a native y-sorting feature).

I enjoyed the overall narrative and writing, some dialogue could be cleaned up but I am very guilty of crunch writing and know how messy things can get in a jam lol. As far as the narrative goes, I thought your idea was super interesting and made me want to see more about how the protagonist went about reconciling his conflicting feelings, and how he might approach similar problems in real life after this experience, and different problems in the same way in the future. I'm not saying I think there should've been more content, I think what you have is a good amount for a jam, I just think it was intriguing enough to explore further!

Keep it up, I look forward to seeing more!

Developer

Thank you very much for playing the game and taking the time to write this feedback. I really appreciate the compliments :D

Thanks for pointing out those bugs, they're already on to the todo list; It was really nice to know that the intro did its jon wonderfully. And yes there should have been more content but unfortunately it had been cut off for the jam; though the main message got through and that's amazing.

Thank you very much again!

This game was such a treat! Im glad the main character was able to confront himself and the narrative devices were nice! The world transforming was pretty trippy. Great job! :)

Thank you for playing! Im glad you noticed this details!

The music and the scenery is so lovely, I got lost for a few minutes but I figured out eventually. Lovely game :]]]
